Bold, innovative and cutting-edge contemporary jazz.
Composer/pianist/violinist Hayley Lam has released “Being Alive," a single that serves as expository material for her debut EP Being Alive scheduled for release later this year. The track features Marko Djordjevic on drums and Akos Forgacs on bass.

Hayley Lam's musical background is diverse: she is a classically-trained pianist, received her classical diploma at 11, studied jazz composition and performance at Berklee, and yet likes to wander into progressive rock territory. “Being Alive" contains elements of jazz fusion, yet defies classification. “I am still trying to get hold of the “genre" thing. I view jazz as a tool for self expression through improvisation and innovation. At the end of the day, you are an artist, you create something, and classification isn't necessarily a consideration, as long as you know you've expressed yourself artistically and your music reflects integrity."

Hayley's single is of a very stark contrast to her works that she presented to date. Her past award-winning compositions such as “The Unknown Bell," is has been coined as “Stravinsky meets Brookmeyer," embracing the modern classical techniques in a setting of a jazz big band. Her solo work “Distance Structures," which will be featured by An Art Artistry in Greece later this year is an atonal composition with certain jazz elements, where modal exchanges and quartal voicings can be heard. Indeed, the music that she will soon release will come as a surprise to many of her peers.

Her upcoming EP is a personal document: it reflects her attitude about life, her experiences with overcoming life's challenges, and gives thanks for “Being Alive" today.

You can support the completion of Being Alive by making a contribution to Hayley's Go Fund Me campaign.
