August 8-13 at 8:00pm & 10:30pm

Don't miss the legendary altoist/clarinetist PAQUITO D'RIVERA and his sextet at the Blue Note, 131 West Third Street in the Village, August 8 - 13 at 8:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. nightly. Tickets are $30.00 at tables; $20.00 at bar.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1948, Paquito D'Rivera began his career as a child prodigy, playing both the clarinet and the saxophone with the Cuban National Symphony Orchestra, for which he later premiered several works by notable Cuban composers. A restless musical genius, Paquito formed and performed with various musical ensembles as a teenager and became one of the founding members and conductors of the Orquesta Cubana de Musica Moderna. He was also a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical group Irakere, which toured extensively throughout America and Europe and won a Grammy for its explosive mixture of jazz, rock, classical, and traditional Cuban music.

Today, he continues that path of success, highlighted by several more Grammy awards, a book and numerous performances around the world. Paquito's music and his concerts continue to explore how jazz can be enriched by Caribbean rhythms and a diversity of South American musical elements. “The Afro-Cuban tradition is fine," Paquito says, “but doing the same thing over and over again gets old, just as eating rice and beans everyday. In my bands I still keep the same diversity and broad vision." On this stop at the Blue Note, he brings his stellar sextet, featuring Alon Yavnai, piano; Oscar Stagnaro, bass; Mark Walker, drums; Diego Urcola, trumpet; Pernell Saturnino, percussion; and Paquito on clarinet and alto sax. While Paquito's discography includes over 30 solo albums in jazz, bebop and Latin music, his contributions to classical music are also impressive.

Look for great music, a vibrant atmosphere, and fantastic food when Paquito D'Rivera returns to the Blue Note, August 8-13!
