Music industry trade groups the RIAA and IFPI are pushing for the adoption of a single global release day for music, according to reports surfacing this week. Currently new music is released on Tuesday, the UK on Monday, and Australia and Germany debut releases on Friday.
No word yet if WIN, AIM, A2IM and other independent music trade groups are part of the discussions.
Currently, when a new album is released on Australia on Friday, illegal downloads spike caused by motivated fans who don't want to wait 3-4 days for the release in the UK or US. New release patterns like Beyonce's recent surprise album are also motivating the change.
