MELPHI
Easy listening songs full of jazz and soul

MELPHI is a contemporary Dutch band representing singer Lotte van Drunen, pianist Rogier Telderman, bassist Jurriaan Dekker, and drummer Willem van der Krabben. Their music can be characterised by good musical interaction, original compositions and the powerful and versatile voice of singer Lotte. Their album will be released on 4 April by record label SnipRecords as a digital (high resolution) album. The album introduces the listeners to MELPHI’s world; Lotte sings what’s on her mind and meanwhile the band ensures that the listener, like the band in daily life, can’t sit still.

MELPHI released an EP which was well received and created high expectations in 2011. They won the prestigious Dutch DuvelVibes Challenge and subsequently recorded a track with Blue Note Records in 2012. In the following years they played at various renowned festivals and venues. Through The Looking Glass is the band’s first full album.

Interaction

The album is recorded according to the philosophy of the record label: interaction is essential. This means that all musicians played simultaneously during the recordings. ‘The recording process is quite demanding as a musician. You really depend on the band, not only on your own play. For example, if you have just recorded your personal best take the bassist may have made a mistake on that take’, explains pianist Rogier Telderman, ‘this means that the focus is on the performance of the band and less on your own instrument. It is really cool to hear this tension or balance on the album. There are not a lot of bands these days who dare choose this approach, but for our music it worked perfectly!’

Tour

MELPHI presents her debut album with a tour in April and May at important Dutch jazz stages such as Paradox, de Regentenkamer The Hague, Musis Sacrum Arnhem and Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. They start their tour in Rotterdam’s jazz club BIRD on March 30.

Digital

The album will be released as a digital album. It will be made available in Studio Master quality (96kHz/24bit, the format in which it is recorded at the studio), CD quality (44.1kHz/16bit) and MP3 quality. Digital high resolution allows for the music to be transferred as it was intended by the musicians, without compromises. The album booklet will be included as pdf, but for an enhanced experience a free iPad app is also released which contains additional background information about the band and the recording. The album will be available via the website of the label, high resolution download sites highresaudio.com and hifitrack.com in addition to iTunes.
