From the vibrant musical heart of Cali, Colombia to the diverse cultural communities of New Jersey, the internationally acclaimed all-women ensemble Las Guaracheras arrives for a special three-city Hispanic Heritage Month residency presented by Gregory Burrus Productions. The New Jersey engagement is part of the group's broader United States tour, which includes performances across multiple states throughout September and October 2026.

Founded in Cali by percussionists Laura Linares and Mónica Castro, Las Guaracheras has emerged as one of Latin America's most exciting contemporary ensembles, blending salsa, son, guaracha, Afro-Colombian traditions, and Latin jazz influences into a powerful and distinctly modern musical statement. The group's artistic mission celebrates the elevation of women's voices and leadership within Afro-Latin music while honoring the traditions established by generations of legendary performers.

Presented by Gregory Burrus Productions, this unique residency will bring the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month to Millburn, Newark, and Jersey City, offering audiences three distinctly different experiences connected by a common thread of musical excellence, cultural celebration, and community engagement.

Stop One: Faith, Fellowship and Celebration

Sunday, Mt. Zion AME Church, Millburn

The tour begins in Millburn at Mt. Zion AME Church as part of the acclaimed Jesus & Jazz series. This special gathering will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through music that inspires, uplifts, and builds cultural understanding across communities.

Pastor Rev. Eyesha Marable will welcome Las Guaracheras and guests to Mt. Zion's congregation, setting the stage for an inspiring afternoon where faith, culture, and music come together in celebration. The church setting offers a uniquely meaningful environment for audiences to experience the ensemble's joyful spirit and powerful artistic message.

As rhythms rooted in Afro-Caribbean traditions fill the sanctuary, the performance will highlight music's enduring ability to unite people across languages, cultures, and generations. It is a fitting beginning to a residency that celebrates both heritage and hope.

Stop Two: A Prestigious Jazz Presentation

Wednesday, Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies at Clements Place, Newark

The second stop moves to Newark, where Las Guaracheras will perform under the auspices of the renowned Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies, one of the most respected jazz education, research, and archival institutions in the world.

Audience demand has already demonstrated the excitement surrounding the group's arrival. Following a rapid sellout of the initial performance, a second set was added, providing additional opportunities for jazz and Latin music enthusiasts to experience the ensemble's dynamic artistry.

Reflecting on the significance of the engagement, Wayne Winborne, Executive Director of the Institute of Jazz Studies, commented:

“The story of jazz has always been enriched by global voices and cultural exchange. Las Guaracheras represent the vitality of contemporary Afro-Latin music and demonstrate how tradition can remain vibrant through innovation, excellence, and artistic vision."

The Newark presentations place the ensemble within a distinguished artistic tradition while showcasing the continuing dialogue between jazz and Afro-Latin musical cultures.
