Concert Series Designed to Showcase Talent
Live at the Hollywood Theater will open its 2011 Season on March 19, 2011 with a double bill concert featuring the two ensembles led by Christopher Burnett and Matt Otto. Both, Kansas City based saxophone artists and composers will present a 45 minute set of combining original works and select work by other composers. There will be an intermission between ensemble performances. The series also serves as a community fundraiser with proceeds from ticket sales from each concert supplementing funding for the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Services to provide youth program scholarships. These events also contribute toward on-going historic preservation projects to preserve the Hollywood Theater building and facilities (National Register of Historic Places). Concerts begin at 8:00 pm.
March 19th Concert Featured Artists
Chris Burnett is an alto saxophonist, composer, recording artist and educator who began his active career at the age of 18 years old when he was selected by audition and accepted for musical service as a performing artist with the US Army Bands Career Program, where he performed and toured with several noteworthy professional US military band organizations for audiences at numerous locations in the continental United States and overseas.
This concert will include original composition selections from Chris Burnett's upcoming “5 GENERATIONS" release (ARC-2277—AUDIO CD), with the performance of relatively familiar modern jazz selections by legendary composers such as Cannonball Adderley, Dave Brubeck and Wayne Shorter. The final two selections of this set of the concert will include the addition of Leavenworth resident, music educator and performer, Bob Cowan on trombone.
Chris Burnett Quartet is: Chris Burnett, alto saxophone, flute and compositions; with Roger Wilder on piano, Gerald Spaits on bass, and Brian Steever on drums. The “5 GENERATIONS" ensemble features special guest artist, Amy Hearting on marimba.
Matt Otto studied music performance and composition at the Indiana University, Berklee School of Music, The New School for Social Research (BFA) and California Institute of the Art (MFA). Having lived in Japan, New York City and Los Angeles he has performed with a variety of artists, including Reggie Workman, Charlie Haden, Larry Koonse, Rashid Bakr, Ben Monder, Wadada Leo Smith, Willie Jones III, Anthony Wilson, Alan Ferber, Tom Harrell, Albert Tootie Heath, Gregory Hutchinson, Joe La Barbera, Junior Mance, Leroy Vinegar, Jimmy Smith and others.
Matt Otto's Folk Jazz ensemble presents Mr. Otto's original compositions. This performance of Matt Otto's “Folk Jazz" will feature vocalist, Annie Ellicott with a band of Matt Otto on tenor saxophone, Gerald Dunn on alto saxophone, Jeff Harshbarger on bass, Roger Wilder on piano and Mike Warren on drums. The purpose of many of Mr. Otto's groups is to allow each player an outlet for self expression through composition and improvised performance in a supportive and comfortable musical environment.

What they have come to discover is something unaffected by fads, trends and the giant maw of mind-numbing commercialism. Some call it arsekickin music from the heartland.

November 19: Angela Hagenbach—This versatile Kansas City native sings everything from swinging, straight-ahead jazz and blues to sensual, rhythmic Latin Jazz with seemingly effortless agility. Her lush contralto spans a range of nearly three octaves, and her rich life experience contributes to the original compositions and lyrics featured on her latest recordings. The former fashion model has appeared as an artist/clinician at festivals, jazz clubs, and educational institutions throughout the World.
“It was sunny and mild on the evening of June 15, ideal weather for Angela Hagenbach and her sextet as they took the stage for the third weekly concert at Jazz in June. The audience of several thousand responded with enthusiasm to a performance emphasizing the singer's considerable range and her penchant for Latin rhythms."—Tom Ineck, Berman Music Foundation
Series History and Background
With a founding mandate and primary purpose to showcase the world-class talent based in the Kansas City area, Live at the Hollywood Theater is a new concert series that began in November 2010 with concerts by The Sons of Brasil and the Roger Wilder Quartet. Audio engineers from Kansas Public Radio (KPR) conducted a live recording of this first highly successful event in November 2010. The live concert of performances by both, The Sons of Brasil and The Roger Wilder Quartet is to broadcast over the air in coming weeks.
The series is hosted at the Performing Arts Center in Leavenworth, Kansas. The Leavenworth Performing Arts Center is based in the historic Hollywood Theater on the recently renovated Delaware Street corridor in downtown Leavenworth. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 1938 theatre is a wonderful architectural example of the later phase of the Art Deco movement. Formally called the Hollywood Theater, this structure entertained the public on its silver screen for nearly forty years. Donated to the city by Durwood, Inc., former owners, in 1977, the theater now hosts live theatrical productions by Leavenworth's River City Community Players. Built in the 1930's, this art deco theater has a rich history.
