Kimmel Center's Mellon Jazz Up Close “Goes Global" series concludes with a performance of Western European jazz, led by flamenco guitarist Juanito Pascual, pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and percussionist Jamey Haddad on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 7:30pm in Perelman Theater. Together, Pascual's pure flamenco guitar melded with Patitucci's Brazilian influences, alongside Panama-native Perez's piano and Haddad's Middle Eastern-inspired percussion create an illuminating Latin jazz program with international appeal. Pascual, called a “flamenco phenom....a rising star of the Spanish guitar form" by the Boston Globe, makes his Kimmel Center debut, replacing Gerardo Nnez who was unable to travel to the United States due to minor injuries sustained in a car accident.

“One of the most technically astute bassists around."--LA Times on John Patitucci

He frequently collaborates with Spanish artists, including recent performances in Madrid's renowned Casa Patas with well-known flamenco singer/dancer Elena Andjar and members of the Maria Pags Dance Company, as well as forthcoming recording projects with pianist Alex Conde Carrasco and flamenco singer “El Pola." He has also performed with Grammy winning artists including soprano Dawn Upshaw, jazz pianist Michel Camilo, renowned Middle-Eastern musician Omar Faruk Takbilek, and Israeli cantor Emil Zrihan. Since 2005, Pascual has been the director of the annual summer Flamenco Institute at the New England Conservatory in Boston.

After studying at the National Conservatory in Panama and graduating from Berklee College of Music, Danilo Perez quickly won over the world's attention. He has led his own group since the early 1990s, and as bandleader has earned three Grammy nominations for his ebullient and innovative recordings. Prez is a member of the Wayne Shorter Quartet and has toured with the late Steve Lacy, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, the late Michael Brecker, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis and Roy Haynes, and first came to international attention playing in Dizzy Gillespie's United Nations Orchestra. He is currently founder and president of the Panama Jazz Festival. He also serves as faculty of the New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music, an Ambassador of Goodwill for Unicef and a Cultural Ambassador of Panama. Since 2003, he has served as artistic advisor for the Kimmel Center's Mellon Jazz Up Close Series in Perelman Theater, curating five nights of jazz each season. Each performance has been recorded for broadcast by WRTI.

Since attracting worldwide acclaim as a member of Chick Corea's Elektric and Akoustic Bands, Grammy winning bassist John Patitucci has become one of today's most influential musicians and composers. He has released several remarkable albums as a leader of his own groups and made notable contributions to renowned ensembles led by Wayne Shorter, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard and Danilo Prez. As a performer, Patitucci has played throughout the world with his own band, and with jazz luminaries Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, the late Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker and scores of others. His work has garnered a total of two Grammy Awards and more than fifteen Grammy nominations.

Lebanese-American Jamey Haddad is regarded as the foremost world music and jazz percussionist in the United States. As an associate professor at Boston's highly regarded Berklee School of Music, Jamey balances mentoring promising young students with a demanding U.S. and international performing schedule. He collaborates regularly with vocalist Betty Buckley, Brazil's Assad Brothers, Paul Winter Consort, Dave Liebman, Trichy Sankaran, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel and Steve Shehan among others. Haddad performed at the Kimmel Center in 2006 as part of the Fs Festival, and is deeply committed to the spirit and mission of creating peace through musical events and thought-provoking interdisciplinary dialogue.
