Ars Nova Workshop presents:

Thursday, February 3 | 8pm
John Hollenbeck's Claudia Quintet
with
John Hollenbeck, drums, percussion
Chris Speed, clarinet
Ted Reichman, accordian
Matt Moran, vibraphone
Drew Gress, double-bass

The Claudia Quintet's newest release, I, Claudia (Cuneiform Records) demonstrates that “innovative jazz...can be delicate, witty, ethereal and radiantly lyric" [Chicago Tribune]. Their music is highly seductive, ripe with compelling, propulsive grooves, dynamic sensitivity and telepathic improvisation. Aside from the Claudia Quintet, leader/percussionist John Hollenbeck is best known for his work with Theo Bleckmann, Fred Hersch, and Meredith Monk. He is joined by some of the finest downtown players including bassist Drew Gress (Fred Hersch, Tim Berne, Uri Caine), clarinetist Chris Speed (Pachora, Yeah No, AlasNoAxis), accordion player Ted Reichman (Marc Ribot, Sue Garner, Anthony Braxton) and vibraphonist Matt Moran (Joe Maneri, Butch Morris).

Saturday, February 5 | 8pm
Rob Price, guitar
Ellery Eskelin, alto saxophone
Trevor Dunn, double-bass
Jim Black, drums

Performing material composed and arranged primarily for the quartet's recording session and subsequent release At Sunset (Gutbrain), recorded and mixed by legendary underground engineer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, John Zorn's Naked City, The Boredoms). Leader/guitarist Robert Price was a member of Dim Sum Clip Job. His compositions explore the ideas of jazz and surf to free improvisation and blues. This remarkable ensemble includes Ellery Eskelin (Rabih Abou-Khalil, Andrea Parkins), Trevor Dunn (Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, John Zorn's Electric Masada), and Jim Black (Bloodcount, Laurie Anderson).
