The International Center for the Arts at San Francisco State is proud to present a history-making night of jazz featuring Jimmy Cobb and Eric Alexander at Yoshi's San Francisco on Thursday night, May 15, at 8 pm.

The night will feature two great events: First will be the first public performance by the San Francisco State Generations Band, featuring Jimmy Cobb, Eric Alexander, Marcus Belgrave, Ronnie Mathews, Ray Drummond and Andrew Speight. This high-powered all-star band will play two sets during the course of the evening.

Second will be an exciting “Battle of the Combos" between two great bands of recent college graduates, finalists in the first ever Generations International Competition for Emerging Jazz Combos. The finalist bands, the sextet Meaningtone and the Nial Djuliarso (Nye-al Ju-lee-ARE-so) Quartet, both from New York, were selected from among dozens of applicants in this first annual competition for young bands. The two combos will play one set each and be judged by the members of the Generations Band. The winning band will earn the first annual Generations Fellowship, a one-year residency at San Francisco State, including intensive group mentorship by the Generations Band musicians. It will be a dream come true for one of these bands, but a dream that has to be earned on the bandstand.

Generations, a program of the International Center for the Arts at San Francisco State University, was developed as a means of returning jazz education to the group dynamic and mentorship model that first gave jazz its heart and soul.

The music begins at 8:00 pm, and a single low ($12.00) admission charge is good for the entire night of great jazz and competitive high drama. Yoshi's is an all-age venue, so bring the kids! Tickets are available via the Yoshi's online at www.yoshis.com, by calling by calling (415) 655-5600, or by visiting the Yoshi's box office at 1330 Fillmore Street in San Francisco.
