Jazz Series Begin in Orange Co. at Performing Arts Center

Jazz season at the Orange County Performing Arts Center begins this month. The schedule includes international jazz stars, such as Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Branford Marsalis and Terrence Blanchard, as well as up-and comers Sara Gazarek and Sachal Vasandani and highly respected veterans, Bill Charlap and Freddie Cole. A special tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson is included. Performances will be held in both the large Segerstrom Concert Hall and the intimate Samueli Theater.

Vocalists Sara Gazarek and Sacha Vasdani
Sept. 24 and 25 at 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. in Samueli Theater

Gazarek seamlessly combines the intimacy of singer/songwriter stylings with the musical and improvisational elements of jazz Vasdani is one of the hottest young jazz singer-songwriter currently on the scene.

Renaud Garcia-Fons' La Línea del Sur Quartet
Nov.19 and 20 at 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. in Samueli Theater

Renaud Garcia-Fons with his quartet explores classical, jazz, Persian, Indian, Mediterranean and South American music. His sound is an amalgam of double bass, cello, violin, guitar, lute, oud and more.

Blues at the Crossroads: Robert Johnson Centennial
Jan.29 at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

Johnson, one of the most famous and influential of all the Mississippi blues musicians, died 100 years aga. His centennial celebration top blues performers of today—Big Head Todd & The Monsters, David “Honeyboy" Edwards, Hubert Sumlin and Cedric Burnside & Lightnin' Malcolm.

Chick Corea and Gary Burton: Duets
March 4 at 8 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

Corea is one of the most prolific performers and composers of the second half of the 20th century. Always bases in jazz, he played in an astonishing number of musical styles in his illustrious career. Burton's innovations in jazz, especially his approach to the vibraphone and his mastery of simultaneous four-mallet playing, have been his hallmark. They team up for this remarkable evening.

Branford Marsalis Quartet and Terence Blanchard Quintet
April 3 at 2 p.m. in the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

Two Grammy Award-winning musicians. Two remarkable ensembles. One incredible night of music. Saxophonist Marsalis and trumpeter Blanchard appear together for the first time at the Center with their bands.

Bill Charlap, pianist, and Freddie Cole, vocalist
May 13 and 14 at 7:30 & 9:30 p.m. in Samueli Theater

Highly regarded pianist Charlap joins forces with singer Cole to present an evening of popular song. Charlap's way with the great American songbook “is never less than dazzling," according to the BBC. Cole “has a gorgeous autumnal baritone, expressive phrasing and pitch-perfect feel for jazz standards, pop tunes and love ballads," according to People. .
