PHILADELPHIA, PA: Pat Metheny, legendary jazz guitarist perhaps best known for his work with the Pat Metheny Group, and 19 GRAMMY awards (with the possibility of a 20th for his recent Unity Band release), has stepped up to help the Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia (CSCP) by providing the music for the organization’s 2012 electronic holiday card. The e-card, designed by Lauren Keswick and marketing and communications director Scott Bluebond and produced by Keswick was distributed today to the cancer support organization’s friends, supporters, members, donors and others. It is available at cancersupport-phila.org. The card shows images from CSCP’s events and programs from the past year.
The song used for the e-card is called “Letter from Home” and was originally released as the title track from the 1989 CD. This gold record went on to win the GRAMMY for best Contemporary Jazz Performance. The song was selected by Scott Bluebond who was searching for a follow up track to match the emotional intensity of CSCP’s prior holiday card which featured the song “Give Hope” by longtime Yes vocalist Jon Anderson.
“I was going through my iTunes library and came upon ‘Letter from Home,’ a song I’ve listened to often over the years. The concept of receiving that letter during the holidays struck me as a perfect accompaniment to the images collected over the past year at the Cancer Support Community of Philadelphia. So, after a suggestion from co-worker Jen Moy that the card actually be a letter this time around, the foundation was set” says Bluebond. “I wrote it as a letter coming from a son or daughter to his/her parents. S/he is dealing with a cancer diagnosis, is appreciative of what CSCP has provided to him/her over the past year, and is anxious to share that with his/her parents. And, of course, happy to be coming back home to be with family for the holidays” he adds.
“Letter from Home” is the last track on the CD, and is the quietest song on the album. It evokes the holidays and presents the melancholy one feels quite often at this time of year. Ironically, however, there is much joy to be found in the photographs used throughout the card. “Most people would be surprised at the laughter that can be heard from the second floor of Ridgeland when support groups are being held downstairs,” says Bluebond. “It’s certainly not easy to deal with a cancer diagnosis. However, look at the faces of the people in this e-card. They are living their lives to the fullest, and we try to help them do so.”
Bluebond approached Pat Metheny’s management company, Ted Kurland Associates, to ask for permission to use the song. It was granted immediately. “Pat has been very philanthropic to our organization over the past couple of years. We’ll have another special announcement to make about Pat’s contribution to CSCP in 2013. We are thrilled and most grateful that Pat Metheny has helped us out this year.”
