The Jazz Arts Group of Columbus (JAG) offers a stellar line-up of music making opportunities to engage all ages and interests with ongoing classes and workshops at the Jazz Academy community instructional space in the Lincoln Theatre complex. With nearly 5,000 square feet, the Jazz Academy is a premier facility for multi-generational and recreational music making, ensemble playing, after-school programs, technology instruction and lectures with world-class musicians.

Learn to listen to music more effectively while enhancing your enjoyment and appreciation of musical performances in Jazz History & Appreciation 101 (October 4 November 8) with Jim Masters. Through listening and discussion, participants will compare and contrast various styles of jazz, while exploring the musicians and ensembles that made them famous.

Explore the role of the vocalist in popular music, including rock, pop, rhythm & blues and jazz in Popular Music and the Singer (October 2 November 20) with Rachel Sepulveda. This class is open to singers of all ages and abilities who love to sing!

Explore the role of the bass guitar as it relates to blues, jazz, gospel and R&B music, both historically and within contemporary music in Jazz Bass Lines & Soloing (October 3 November 7) with Dwight Bailey. This hands-on class will feature demonstration sessions, video and recording research, and the function of the bass in the rhythm section including dialogue with the drummer.

Don't miss our other fall offerings including three of Columbus' finest jazz guitar players Derek DiCenzo, Colin Lazarski and Stan Smith for a fun and hands-on jazz guitar class (October 5 November 17). Nationally-known jazz educator, Bradley Sowash, will teach you how to play holiday melodies by ear using lead sheets (notated melody with chord symbols) in “Cool Yule" on the Piano Stool (November 7 December 12). Jay Miglia brings back his Big Band for Grown-Ups ensemble class (October 4 17), including a culminating performance opportunity with Vaughn Wiester's Famous Jazz Orchestra at the Clintonville Women's Club. And for our younger jazz fans, Rebecca Ogden “The Music Lady" will lead J is for Jazz (October 22 November 5), providing kids the opportunity to indulge in jazz play, while Jumpin' JaKs (October 22 November 5) offers preschoolers the chance to explore American music in all of its forms.

The Jazz Academy will also host a series of free workshops from the Columbus Music Co-op including “So You Want to Make Music in Columbus?" (October 16) and “Legal and Business Issues for Musicians" (November 13). We'll also host a series of conversations from some of Columbus' favorite personalities about what they love to listen to and why in Playlist A-Listers including Good Day Columbus' Johnny DiLoretto (October 13); Adam Brouillette, Andy Dodson and Josh Quinn of Wonderland (October 25); and Jazz Sunday's Jack Marchbanks (November 3). Helen Welch will lead a swingin' rhythm section and sing the Songs of the Season in a holiday sing-a-long (December 3). And you can join the 3 B's of the CJO Byron Stripling, Bobby Floyd and Bob Breithaupt for a day of music-making and exploration in Learnin' the Blues with Byron (December 28).
