'Light Fantastic' and 'Joanna'

Lately, I've been looking at mid-1960s films and their soundtracks. I'm particularly curious about barely known and forgotten movies, experimental in some cases or low-budget, but keenly scored. The world changed dramatically during this period and almost overnight. The pre-teen and teen market started to gain commercial value and power, and young adults felt at sea. Films emerged to capture the anxious plight of the middle generation shaped by a late-1950s ethos and the exciting new youth scene. Many of ...

Trumpeter and flugelhornist Clark Terry had a long career. His first recording session was as a leader, in 1947, with his Section Eights for V-Discs, a label started during the American Federation of Musicians recording ban of 1942-'44 that allowed music to be recorded for the Army provided the masters were destroyed. Soon V-Discs was provided to the Navy and Marines as well. Clark's last recording date was in 2008, in Florida. Over the course of more than 60 years, ...

Yesterday I posted my interview with Mike Stern, a superb jazz-rock guitarist who came up at the end of the 1970s. In my post, I also mentioned that Mike has a residency at New York's 55 bar and that he will be performing at 92NY on July 28 to close out the cultural institution’s Jazz in July series that begins July 19. As noted, Mike will be joined by Chris Potter and Nicole Glover on saxophones, Bill Charlap on piano ...

In late 1965, Sonny Rollins was on tour in Europe and Scandinavia. At the Paris Jazz Festival on Thursday, November 4, he was on stage, backed by French bassist Gilbert Rovere and American expatriate drummer Art Taylor. Also appearing at the festival were Ornette Coleman, Bill Evans with Lee Konitz, Art Blakey's New Jazz Men, Dakota Staton, the Teddy Wilson Trio and the Gerry Mulligan All-Stars. A special thanks to Carl Woideck for sending along a link to this terrific ...

Videos: Barbara Dennerlein in the 1980s

Barbara Dennerlein is an exceptional jazz organist. Few in the U.S. are familiar with her, largely because Dennerlein has rarely toured here. Born in Munich in 1964, Dennerlein began playing the organ at age 11 in a household where her parents loved jazz. She quickly became a master of the bass foot pedals and was soon playing concerts. Dennerlein is still a monster player. This live clip with Rhoda Scott from the Bern Jazz Festival in 2002 still rocks and ...

Backgrounder: Brother Jack's 'Heatin' System"

Between 1968 and 1974, organist Brother Jack McDuff recorded seven albums for Chicago's Cadet label. One of the most interesting of the bunch was The Heatin' System. What made the 1972 double album special was its hip Chicago soul-jazz flavor and the band behind him: Bobby Alston (tp), Don Myrick and David Young (ts,fl), Brother Jack McDuff (org,p,melodica), Marty Roberts (g), Phil Upchurch and Sam Jones (b) on different tracks, Greg Williams (d) and Frederick Derf" Walker (cga). Rather than ...

Backgrounder: Burrell With Brother Jack

Guitarist Kenny Burrell recorded four albums with organist Brother Jack McDuff in late 1962 and '63. The one I'm sharing with you today is Crash!, the last of the bunch that was recorded by Burrell for Prestige in February 1963. It featured Burrell with Harold Vick (ts), Brother Jack McDuff (org), Joe Dukes (d) and Ray Barretto (cga). The album has a great soul groove, and Burrell and McDuff played off each other well, with Vick's tough tenor rolling through ...

Maybe you're cooking today for the holiday weekend. Or perhaps you're driving a long distance to attend a family gathering or visit the house of a friend. Or you may just be going for a long bike ride or working over the long weekend. How does three hours of uninterrupted Charles Earland sound to you? I thought so. Known as the Mighty Burner, the Philadelphia soul-jazz organist began playing the Hammond in 1968 and went on to form some of ...
