Pianist Omar Sosa received the award for Afro-Caribbean Jazz Album of the Year from the Jazz Journalists Association for his latest CD release Sentir" (OTA1009). Presented on June 19, 2002 at the Jazz Standard in New York by JJA president Howard Mandel, Omar's award was one of 39 categories acknowledged by the association. Alyn Shipton wins the 'Jazz Writer of the Year' Award for his New History of Jazz in the British Hamlet Jazz awards. The prize was presented at last week's ceremony by Humphrey Lyttelton, who described the book as 'the definitive history of jazz'.
