Chamber Music America (CMA) announces the 2002 recipients of its New Works: Creation and Presentation program. The innovative grant-making program, now in its third year, supports composer/performer-led ensembles in the creation and presentation of compositions in the jazz idiom. Grants ranging from $10,000 to $14,000 were awarded to the following composers and their ensembles: Tim Armacost, Baikida Carroll, George Colligan, Robin Eubanks, David Gilmore, Charles Ned Goold, Jovino Santos Neto, Greg Osby, Michele Rosewoman, Walt Weiskopf, and Michael Weiss. The program provides additional support to grantees who choose to conduct a audience engagement project related to the new composition. New Works: Creation and Presentation is part of the Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project, made possible with generous funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

More than 130 applications were reviewed by an independent panel of jazz artists: Ahmed Abdullah, Akua Dixon, Billy Harper, Cliff Korman, Oriente Lopez, Bennie Maupin, Jason Moran, Douglas Purviance, Claudio Roditi and Rene Rosnes.

CMA, the national service organization for the ensemble music profession, was founded in 1977 to promote artistic excellence and the economic stability of the field, and to ensure that chamber music, in its broadest sense, is a vital part of American life. With a membership of over 8,000, including musicians, ensembles, presenters, artists' managers, educators, music businesses, and advocates of ensemble music, CMA welcomes and represents a wide range of musical styles and traditions. In addition to its funding programs, CMA provides its members with consulting services, health and instrument insurance, conferences, seminars and several publications including the bi-monthly magazine, Chamber Music, and website, www.chamber-music.org.
