On Friday 18th and Saturday 19th September, at Cafe Oto in Dalston, London, a host of musicians who have long-standing associations with the label will play in a series of solo, duo and trio performances. In keeping with the label's traditions, as established by Derek Bailey, there will also be a series of Company-style ad hoc groupings devised by the musicians each evening.
The musicians already announced as taking part are drummer Han Bennink (whose antics at a recent performance at Meltdown stole the show), Steve Beresford on electronics, saxophonists John Butcher and Tony Bevan, Oren Marshall on tuba, violinist Philipp Wachsmann, harpist Rhodri Morgan, Alex Ward on clarinet, tap dancer Will Gaines, percussionist Thebe Lipere, bassist Simon H Fell, drummer Steve Noble, sound collagist Ashley Wales and guitarist Duck Baker.
Those with keen memories will recall that Rhodri Davies, Simon H Fell and Will Gaines all played alongside Derek Bailey (and Mark Wastell) on the most recent Incus Company release, Company in Marseille (Incus, 2001). All of the other musicians played with Derek Bailey, many in Company.
The new Incus release will feature renowed fingerstyle guitarist Duck Baker and is entitled Duck Palace. It includes tracks that Derek Bailey recorded at his home in Hackney of informal jamming with Baker. These are augmented by live recordings by two other lineups: Baker's ongoing occasional duo with trombone legend Roswell Rudd and a one-time only trio featuring John Zorn on sax and Cyro Baptista on percussion. At the lauch event on Saturday 18th September, Baker will play in a quartet with Steve Noble, Alex Ward and Simon H Fell.
Joint tickets for all three events are priced at 18, available from Cafe Oto.
