The Guelph Jazz Festival, which focuses on innovative and creative improvisation, runs in Guelph, Ont., from Sept. 3 to 7, with concerts, workshops and symposiums. Here are some of this year's highlights.
Sept. 3: DJ Spooky and Vijay Iyer. A collaboration between one of New York's most adventurous turntablists and one of jazz's most promising young pianists and composers. 8 p.m. at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre.
Sept. 4: Rene Lussier and Kevin Breit. Free-flowing interplay between two of Canada's most gifted guitarists. Opening for New Orleans saxophonist Edward (Kidd) Jordan and his quartet. 8 p.m. at the River Run Centre.
Sept. 5: Satoko Fujii Ma-Do. The Japanese pianist and composer's newest quartet will be sharing the bill with the legendary Dutch big band the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra. 8 p.m. at the River Run Centre.
Sept. 6: Jane Bunnett's Carnavalissimo. A free, outdoor street parade and Afro-Cuban dance party organized and hosted by soprano saxophonist Jane Bunnett, with puppets by Jerrard Smith and Natalie Axon. 9:45 p.m. at the Wyndham Street Jazz Tent.
Sept. 7: John Zorn. Three doses of the saxophonist and bandleader, with members of his Electric Masada band. In the morning, there's a performance called Improvisations, while the afternoon double bill is split between his The Dreamers suite and a performance by Electric Masada. 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the River Run Centre.
