The second single from the coming musical 'Play It By Ear, Know It By Heart,' is an original New Orleans style blues during which the attractive singer is accompanied by a very spirited quartet.

Building upon the success of their previous EP All About The Music In Your Heart, and the first single from the upcoming play (“On Ne Sait Jamais”), Great Aunt Ruth (aka Kathryn Joy) and her Saucy Cats are releasing an exciting second single, “The Ballad of Kitty Bandit."

Blending together a 1920s New Orleans feel with 1950s Dixieland blues and a few modern touches, “The Ballad of Kitty Bandit” features the impressive singing of Kathryn Joy, colorful trumpet by Nolan KatDaddy Shaheed, rollicking piano from Knick Smith and swinging accompaniment by guitarist Greg Porée, bassist Henry The Skipper Franklin, and drummer Kenny Elliott. Kathryn Joy’s voice fits perfectly into the style, being both theatrical in telling the story behind Kitty Bandit, and bluesy. Her final note is particularly strong and memorable.

As with “On Ne Sait Jamais,” this original (which was recorded at Nolan Shaheed’s studio) is part of a musical that Ms. Joy is writing. The song is about the secret life of one of the main characters (Gracie Goodrich) who is the wealthy young widow of the beloved Senator Guy Goodrich.

Kathryn Joy, who comes from a very musical family (her grandfather was a concert pianist and her mother studied opera and sings sacred music) began her musical career when she met veteran pianist Joel Scott on a cruise ship. Scott recognized her talent as a singer and songwriter, and he soon became her mentor. They formed Great Aunt Ruth and the Saucy Cats and recorded four songs during 2013-15 before Scott tragically passed away. Kathryn Joy completed the eclectic project (which ranges from New Orleans jazz and flamenco to a piece called “Swing It Like Ella”) and the result was the popular EP All About The Music In Your Heart. Her vocal coach, Rahn Coleman, arranged and produced the album.

The first single from the Joy musical, “On Ne Sait Jamais” (which translates to “you never can tell” or Fats Waller’s expression “one never knows”), is an infectious piece about seduction. “The Ballad of Kitty Bandit” (arranged by Nolan Shaheed) adds to the story and is the latest musical adventure by Great Aunt Ruth and her Saucy Cats.
