Here's some exciting news about a new academic opportunity for young musicians in Canada and the northwestern U.S..
When the new school year starts in 2011, Western Canada will have its first post- secondary degree program combining jazz and contemporary popular music.
Edmonton's Grant MacEwan University is expanding its music school to include a Bachelor of Music in Jazz & Contemporary Popular Music. This four-year degree program joins MacEwan's long-running two-year Music Diploma program, which has trained artists ranging from acclaimed jazz trumpeter Lina Allemano to rising piano star James Clarke.
MacEwan's new BMus programwhich starts accepting applications on October 1, 2010 for the 2011-2012 academic yearis distinguished by two key factors:
1It combines a focus on performing, recording and composing with business of music" courses that help prepare students to thrive in the rapidly changing world of music, where independence and digital know-how are critical; and
2It provides students with a unique opportunity to combine studies in jazz with rock and pop, in a highly inclusive, creative setting within the university's Centre for the Arts & Communications.
While many Canadian universities are cutting programs, MacEwan is expanding its scope to meet the growing need for young musicians to obtain rigorous, hands-on academic training in a mix of contemporary genres.
