Google Invests in Satellite 'Net Firm

Google announced Thursday that it will invest in a company that intends to provide high-speed Internet access to developing countries via satellite.

The search engine giant will contribute an undisclosed amount of money to O3b Networks, which is looking to provide fiber-like Internet services by utilizing medium-orbit satellites.

“This means data can be quickly transmitted to and from even the most remote locations such as inland Africa or small Pacific islands," Larry Alder, a Google product manager, wrote in a blog post.

Submarine fiber-optic cables are usually the best way to provide adequate Internet service to the far-flung corners of the globe. Once installed, these cables are a “very cost-effective solution," Alder said, “but in many developing and remote areas, fiber isn't available due to economic and sometimes political roadblocks."
