Erwann Gauthier: 'Miles Davis, La Nuit Aussi Est Un Soleil," Talk & Musical Reading
Courtesy Erwann Gauthier
It is a book of presence rather than memory, seeking less to describe Miles than to stand beside him, in the moment and in the blue. We want Miles, here and now—and we close these pages with that rare feeling of having been swept away without having been explained. Patrick Corneau
Miles Davis, la nuit aussi est un soleil followed by A Kind of Jazz—Talk & Musical Reading with Erwann Gauthier
U.S. Foundation, Paris—October 14, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
To mark the centennial of Miles Davis’s birth, Erwann Gauthier presents his new book, Miles Davis, la nuit aussi est un soleil, published by L’Écarlate in Orléans and distributed by L’Harmattan (Paris). Following Nina Simone, l’espace d’un instant in 2022, he continues his literary exploration of jazz with a diptych that is at once a dramatic poem, a memorial, and a box of colors.
Miles Davis was born on May 26, 1926. He would have turned 100 this year.
Rather than offering yet another biography of the trumpeter, Erwann Gauthier takes a freer approach: that of literature, rhythm, silence, and improvisation.
Straddling the line between narrative and poetry, Miles Davis, la nuit aussi est un soleil seeks less to recount a life than to capture a presence: a breath, a tension, a vibration—that unique ability of Miles Davis to bring light forth from darkness.
On September 28, 1991, the “Prince of Darkness”—an elusive figure always in the making—passed away in Los Angeles. The world of jazz thus lost one of its most influential artists.
Thirty-five years later, one question remains: how does one write about a musician who never stopped reinventing himself?
How can we use words to convey his breaks with convention, his metamorphoses, his silences, and that way he always had of appearing where you least expected him? We want Miles, here and now. The book stems from this desire: to approach Miles Davis without freezing him in time, to invent a language capable of embracing his shifts, his flashes of brilliance, and his gray areas.
Through readings, discussions, and musical interludes, this evening will trace the book’s genesis and its relationship to improvisation, silence, and color, centered on one key question: how can one write about jazz without trying to confine it?
