This week at The Village Vanguard, Jan 27-Feb 1, - Don Byron Quartet featuring Jason Moran, Lonnie Plaxico and Billy Hart. Don Byron, clarinetist, composer and arranger, continues to defy categorization with his new album on Blue Note Records, You Are #6 - More Music For Six Musicians, his second album for this band, his fourth for Blue Note Records, and his ninth album as a leader. Byron is the most innovative clarinet virtuoso to emerge on the jazz scene in this generation. The New York City native is a creator of highly original music, a re-inventor of music from every genre, a musical commentator on racial inequities in America and a provocateur, always making us question our assumptions. This January 27-February 1, Don Byron on clarinet and bass clarinet makes his fourth appearance at The Village Vanguard, joined by the members of his new quartet, Jason Moran on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass and Billy Hart on drums.

Next Week at The Village Vanguard - Trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas will be appearing February 3-8 in celebration of Strange Liberation, his new CD on Bluebird Jazz/Arista Associated Labels. Strange Liberation (to be released on January 27, 2004) features special guest, guitarist Bill Frisell, and is the second recording with Dave's Quintet, which he debuted at The Village Vanguard in February of 2001. Dave Douglas' Quintet at The Vanguard, February 3-8, features Uri Caine on Fender Rhodes, Chris Potter on tenor saxophone, James Genus on bass and Clarence Penn on drums.
