As part of its mission to foster and support jazz throughout the country, the Detroit Jazz Festival “Imported from Detroit” is now accepting submissions for two national jazz competitions—trumpet performance and jazz arrangement. Both competitions will be judged by prominent jazz artists and educators, with prize money totaling $5,000 and the chance to perform at the Detroit Jazz Festival on Labor Day Weekend, August 30 through September 2.

The Marcus Belgrave National Jazz Trumpet Competition and JC Heard Jazz Arranging Competitions are designed to highlight a specific jazz composer and celebrate the artistry of the trumpeter and arranger by encouraging new works from young talent throughout the U.S. Persons age 35 years or younger are invited to arrange a Dave Brubeck composition of their choice for big band instrumentation with a featured soloist. A panel of judges, including Marcus Belgrave and Chris Collins, Detroit Jazz Festival Artistic Director, will select the grand-prize winner based on artistic excellence; creativity; technique; group interaction, originality, familiarity with the jazz vocabulary and stylistic continuity.
