Exciting Fall Releases, including Live Junior Wells

Snatch It Back and Hold It!! Yeah, baby! Hope you are as excited as I am about this upcoming fall batch of new (and old) jazz and blues from Delmark. We have the pleasure of releasing more live blues from the funky 70's--this time from one of the most charismatic performers of all, the Godfather of the Blues, Junior Wells, the late playboy himself. Bob Koester gives us another blast from the past with his 1952 personal recording of St Louis trumpet hero, Dewey Jackson. And we jump forward to two leading players on the current creative jazz scene of Chicago, master percussionist Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio with legendary jazz violinist Billy Bang, and composer/saxophonist Keefe Jackson and his Fast Citizens for some daring and inspiring music.

Junior Wells Live at Theresa's 1975 Delmark DE 787

From the same label that brought you Hoodoo Man Blues (Delmark 612), Southside Blues Jam (628) and On Tap (635), now comes the first live Junior Wells album on Delmark, and the only one recorded at Theresa's Lounge where Junior held court during the 1970s. Similar to the highly successful Otis Rush release All Your Love I Miss Loving: Live at Wise Fools Pub (Delmark 781), Live at Theresa's 1975 was recorded by Ken Rasek and was partially aired on local radio station WXRT. The band features three of the best guitar players of the time: Phil Guy, Byther Smith and Sammy Lawhorn. Junior's stage patter between songs is absolutely priceless! Ten Junior songs include “Snatch It Back and Hold It," “Little By Little," “Messin' With The Kid," Come On In This House," and “Juke."

Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio featuring Billy Bang Big M: A Tribute to Malachi Favors Delmark DE 572

Ritual Trio recorded this tribute to Malachi Favors, who passed away in 2004, in the same week as Live at the River East Art Center (Delmark DVD 1566, CD 566). “The band dives into El'Zabar's propulsive compositions with unbounded energy. Saxophonist Ari Brown slides gracefully through winding melodies, his tone smooth and growling, while bassist Yosef Ben Israel's foundation never wavers. Bang is typically stunning, ripping out soulful bowings and sharp plucks with an ever-widening smile"--JazzTimes. Features seven original compositions written in memory of the late great bassist from Art Ensemble of Chicago, Malachi Favors.

Dewey Jackson Live at The Barrel 1952 Delmark DE 246

With Don Ewell, piano; Frank Chace, clarinet; Sid Dawson, trombone; and Booker T. Washington, drums. The release of this CD should transform St. Louis' legendary trumpet player, Dewey Jackson, from a footnote to his rightful place in jazz history. Jackson was born in St. Louis, June 21, 1900 (before Louis Armstrong). He played a year with ragtimer George Reynold's Keystone Band before joining Charlie Creath and alternated between Creath, Fate Marable and his own groups before briefly joining the first Cotton Club band in New York. He returned to the St. Louis scene because he found it more exciting. Jackson recorded for Vocallion in 1926, with Creath for Okeh in '27 and with bassist Singleton Palmer. He occasionally gigged through the 50s and 60s and passed away in March of 1966. This album triples his discography!

Keefe Jackson's Fast Citizens Ready Everyday Delmark DE 571

Keefe Jackson's Fast Citizens explore the boundaries between composition and improvisation. Jackson, saxophonist and principal composer, formed the Chicago group in 2003. “Jackson's marbled tone expresses a lovely lyricism no matter how brusque or serrated his lines get"--Chicago Reader. In 2004, Fast Citizens held a residency at Chicago's famous club the Hideout, where the group developed a formidable cohesiveness. Their music has broadened, even redefined the idea of a “cooperative" band. The group includes saxophonist Aram Shelton and cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm, who also compose for the group, and cornetist Josh Berman, drummer Frank Rosaly and bassist Anton Hatwich. Berman, Jackson, and Rosaly are also members of the Chicago Luzern Exchange, whose 2005 release Several Lights (Delmark 561) received great critical and audience acclaim.
