Two Jazz Virtuosos Play at North Pointe

KINDERHOOK—Pianist Phil Markowitz and saxophonist Dave Liebman join forces Saturday, May 7, for a concert in the Hudson Valley Friends of Jazz series at North Pointe Cultural Center. The 8 p.m. concert, produced by Planet Arts - one2one, is preceded by an informal discussion between audience and performers starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($20 members of HVFOJ or North Pointe, $18 seniors, $10 students). Writing in the New York Times, Barbara Delatiner called Phil Markowitz “a jazz virtuoso." The pianist and composer holds a B.Music degree from The Eastman School of Music and got his early experience playing with Chet Baker and with the Mel Lewis Orchestra. Markowitz often plays and records with Dave Liebman, most recently on their recreation of John Coltrane’s “Meditations," recorded live at Symphony Space in New York City. Markowitz has been honored for his composition and performance by the Howard Foundation (2001), Doris Duke foundation (2000), National Endowment for the Arts (1994 and 1983), and New York Foundation for the Arts (1996 and 1984). Downbeat Magazine called Dave Liebman “one of the most important saxophonists in contemporary music." Born in Brooklyn, he began piano lessons at 9, saxophone at 12. Hearing John Coltrane perform live in Manhattan clubs such the Village Vanguard sparked his interest in jazz; once he had graduated from New York University with a degree in American history, he began to devote himself full time to jazz. Liebman played with Ten Wheel Drive, one of the early jazz-fusion groups, with Miles Davis, and with Chick Corea. Since the 1990s, he has pursued an eclectic contemporary direction with his own quartet, using world percussion instruments and synthesizers. The group has recorded extensively, featuring both original music and arrangements of compositions by Davis and Coltrane as well as Puccini arias. Since 1973, Liebman has consistently placed in the top five of the Downbeat Critics Poll in the soprano saxophone category. In 1989 he founded the International Association of Schools of Jazz, a networking organization for jazz educators and students around the world. He is on the faculty of the graduate Jazz Department of the Manhattan School of Music. A post-performance reception follows the concert. North Point is on Route 9.
