Cornell Dupree: I'm Alright (Dialtone Records, DT0023)
I'm Alright, has the stamp of Cornell through and through. Cornell's theory was to surround himself with great musicians and he got what he needed from the young hotbed of players in Austin TX. In the studio Cornell would put out an idea, roll it around and just start playing with the song. On “Doin' Alright" Cornell and George Porter came up with the basic idea and everyone else chimed in with their contributions for the song structure.
He did not like playing the original songs they were trying to learn in the studio for the guys to hear; he wanted the guys to come up with their own ideas. When we did play the original songs in the studio, you can hear what happened: on “Ham" and “Help me Make it Through the Night" the songs came out sounding like the original, but they still have Cornell's stamp.
Cornell showed just how cool he is when we recorded “Grandma's Hands," and “I Ain't Got You." He took those songs, turned them around, and made them his own. Cornell was able to listen to it, hear something in the song, and use that to make his own interpretation. Cornell was in demand as a session player; his work graced innumerable recordings by artists including Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, Ringo Starr, Wilson Pickett, Lena Horne, Miles Davis, Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway and so many more. It is estimated that Cornell was involved in over 2,500 sessions during his career.
