Brazilian by birth, New Yorker by choice, charismatic, electrifying percussionist, CYRO BAPTISTA leads his unstoppable ensemble of drummers, percussionists and dancers, called BEAT THE DONKEY.

BEAT THE DONKEY is a wild world-beat percussion ensemble that blends and beats up a bewitching stage stew of untamed percussion mixed with dance, performing styles of rock, funk, jazz, samba, and avant-garde.

Beat the Donkey is a literal translation of the Brazilian expression “Pau Na Mula" which, loosely translated, means “let's take it up a notch," or “let's go, let's do it!"

BEAT THE DONKEY is constantly in motion, swaying, bobbing, grooving, dancing and creating an anarchic, but yet very structured, roller coaster rhythm ride. BTD mixes instruments from four continents with Baptista's own percussive creations. Then it's crossbred with fierce, spontaneous dance to produce a spellbinding and infectious performance.

CYRO BAPTISTA is famous for performing and recording with artists such as Trey Anastasio(from Phish), Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Laurie Anderson, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Sting and Yo-Yo-Ma , to name just a few.

One music fan recently wrote “I had the absolute pleasure to see this band live...They have the power in form of music and transported me to magic moments the whole time the show lasted..."

Press Quote from the most recent performance at the University of Richmond, VA “There was sword dancing, acrobatic stunts, carnival costumes, and through it all, some of the most innovative percussion I've ever seen. Thank goodness for musicians who have the courage to really get out there and try to do something completely different."
