BBC Doc: Yacht Rock

With July 4th on a Thursday this year in the U.S., next week is pretty much a wash. Many people are taking off, turning the first week in July into a sweltering version of the week between Christmas and New Year. Today, you can literally hear New York quiet down to a hush.

Since it's Friday and the gateway to summer, now is a good time to feature a new BBC documentary on yacht rock, the name for soft album rock that began in the early 1970s and ran until 1986 as an offshoot of folk rock. Before you turn up your nose, many yacht rock hits were covered by jazz musicians and the genre launched smooth jazz. So put up your feet, crack open a cold Diet Dr Pepper and let I Can Go for That: The Smooth World of Yacht Rock wash over you.
