Amazon on Monday unveiled its Kindle app for the tablet computers, including the iPad.

“Tablet computers, including the iPad, are coming and with our free app, you'll be able to read more than 450,000 Kindle books," Amazon said on its Web site.

The app will use Amazon's Whispersync technology to access the Kindle store, as well as synchronize bookmarks, notes, highlights, and the last page you read on the Kindle and Kindle-compatible devices like PCs, Macs, the iPhone, and the BlackBerry.

Users will not have to own a Kindle to access the Kindle iPad app.

In terms of the interface, the app will fit the look and feel of the tablet you're using, allow for the customization of background color and font size, as well as screen brightness. Page turns will look like the turning of a page in a book, though a basic reading mode without this feature is available.

Amazon promises access to more than 450,000 Kindle books, though options may vary outside the U.S.

The site does not provide details on when the app will be available, though the All Things D blog said it will not be ready by the iPad's April 3 ship date. An Amazon spokesman said in an e-mail that “we look forward to making Kindle for iPad available very soon."
