Welcome to the rat race known as New York City summer festival season. They are seemingly all over the place, from JVC to Vision to all sorts of smaller entities throughout the city. It's funny to think that this much music would be a dream for so many people, some of whom even make special trips to the city just for the occasion. But for many of us, it presents the unenviable task of deciding who to see when and for how long and who just can't be fit in. Good times. So to add to your distress, we present our jam-packed June issue, filled with oodles of suggestions and tantalizing options. For vocal fans, there is a 70th Birthday Celebration for Nancy Wilson (On The Cover). For more modern listeners, Gary Peacock (Interview) performs with Keith Jarrett. For even more modern listeners, Tim Berne (Artist Feature) appears around town including at Vision Festival, as does famed South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo (Encore). Take trips around the city to soak up some of the valuable activities sponsored by the Jazz Museum in Harlem (Special Feature) or go even further uptown to River Room of Harlem (Club Profile). Don't think you're off the hook. We have our usual batch of CD reviews, a whole gaggle of them in fact, a cornucopia of musicians of all styles who would make for a fine night out, or a fine night of running around. Our calendar this month, due in some part to festival season but also a testament to New York's regular hive of activity, may be our biggest ever. Make our efforts worthwhile and support over 800 live shows during the month of June! The weather is warmer, the baseball season is getting steamier, the person on the subway next to you is getting stickier. That's summer in New York. And with festival season in full swing, there is no better place to be.
