The Odd Trio
The word fusion was created for bands like the Odd Trio. Brian Smith, Marc Gilley and Todd Mueller are classically trained musicians who slip easily between a wide range of genres, subverting each genre’s stylistic cues and range of expression for a higher purpose. The members of the Odd Trio have honed a very close improvisatory musical language and are always looking to the future though keenly aware of tradition. Based in Athens, GA, indie rock’s hometown, the Odd Trio are devoted to original music and to working as a band. Longtime friends who met at the University of Georgia, the Odd Trio is a true trio who’s focus is an equal membership in, and ownership of, the music. This release, Birth of the Minotaur, features compositions by all three members. Guitarist Brian Smith uses an array of effects and a beautiful custom made guitar to create intricate textures and moods ranging from atmospheric avant-garde to thumping funk and everything in between. Saxophonist Marc Gilley brings a melodic sensibility and a range of timbres on the Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone saxophones. Todd Mueller’s battery of drum-set and percussion creates a wide variety of sounds, effects, rhythms, and an inner-mounting energy. Rhythm and improvisation are the key elements of the Odd Trio sound. Working in mixed meters, multi-meters, ?-meters, the pulse leads ever forward. The individual members of the trio all have a wide range of eclectic musical experiences to draw on, which directly inform the Odd Trio. Brian Smith is a member of the well-regarded Georgia Guitar Quartet and the newly founded Revien Trio. Marc Gilley is an active session musician, playing on recordings by Jim White, Dr. Fink (of Prince and the Revolution), Band of Horses, Casper and the Cookies, and many others, and is a founding member of the Athens based Funk/Soul/Rock band The Heap. Todd Mueller is principle timpanist with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra and also performs as a member of the Arasmas Percussion Group.
