The Jellyfish

The Jellyfish is a new ensemble brought together by saxophonist/clarinetist, Jacob Gorzhaltsan. The ensemble is rounded out by Ravi Naimpally (tabla) and Ewen Farncombe (keys). The music of the band is fully improvised or composed on the spot, blending a variety of influences, instruments, rhythms and sounds from around the world in a loop-based musical setting. With an emphasis on interaction and communication between musicians, the Jellyfish takes listeners on a musical, explorative, and psychedelic journey of spontaneous composition, with the band usually performing in a continuous hour and a half experience of free-flowing improvisation.

All the members of the band are accomplished Toronto musicians in their own right, with all three having been nominated for the Junos and received various other individual awards. As a group, they began to play in 2021. During a time of sporadic pandemic-era lockdowns and gradually easing restrictions, the fully-improvised nature of the band’s music served as a healthy outlet for creative release and musical interconnection. Establishing a growing local following in Toronto with regular performances at venue-turned bookstore — Sellers and Newel — the Jellyfish decided to enter the studio in the spring of 2024 to record their self-titled debut album.

Recorded at Soundhouse Studio by Ewen Farncombe and mixed/mastered at Parpar Records by Jacob Gorzhaltsan, the album will be released on Dec 1st, 2025. It features totally improvised music, similar to how the group would perform at shows, except split into shorter pieces for an album format.
