The Core: Roots

Read "Roots" reviewed by Mark Corroto

It has been over a decade since a release from the Norwegian jazz band The Core. Founded in 2001, the quartet released half a dozen albums before mostly going their separate ways. Saxophonist Kjetil Møster worked with Gard Nilssen, Mats Gustafsson, and Per Zanussi, pianist Erlend Slettevoll with Hedvig Mollestad and Petter Wettre, bassist Steinar Raknes with Tord Gustavsen, and drummer Espen Aalberg in the Basement Sessions with Jonas Kullhammar and Torbjörn Zetterberg. Roots, the ensemble's ninth recording, ...

The Core: Office Essentials

Read "Office Essentials" reviewed by John Kelman

Those believing the Norwegian scene is all about Nordic Cool and electro-centric improv might change their minds after hearing The Core's Office Essentials. Owing as much to John Coltrane's classic mid-1960s quartet as it does the closer-to-home Jan Garbarek/Bobo Stenson Quartet of the 1970s, The Core is as far from cool as you can get; delivering some of the hottest music to come out of Norway since early Garbarek albums like Afric Pepperbird (ECM, 1970) and Sart (ECM, 1971). But ...

The Core: Office Essentials / Meditations On Coltrane / The Indian Core

Read "The Core: Office Essentials / Meditations On Coltrane / The Indian Core" reviewed by Eyal Hareuveni

The Core is one the most exciting jazz bands in Norway today. The group takes the legacy of saxophonist John Coltrane's classic quartet plus the 1960s' “new thing" innovations of fellow saxophonists Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp, along with closer to home influences such as pianist Keith Jarrett's Scandinavian quartet of the 1970s--which featured Norwegians saxophonist Jan Garbarek and drummer Jon Christensen--and charges it with the visceral energy of rock and metal music to present fresh and bold statements.

The Core: Blue Sky

Read "Blue Sky" reviewed by Tom Greenland

The Core is an exciting, highly energetic young band from Norway, consisting of Espen Aalberg (drums), Kjetil Møster (tenor, soprano saxophones), Erlend Slettevoll (piano) and Steinar Raknes (bass), with Nils Olav Johansen (guitar) sitting in. Drawing their inspiration from such '60s energy players as Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and John Coltrane, these former schoolmates of the jazz academy in Trondheim have developed impressive technique and close collective cohesion. Blue Sky, their second release (following 2004's Vision), features a ...

A Core Flaw In Music's Blockchain [Chris Castle]

Source: HypeBot

Although many in the music industry are excited by the possibilities of blockchain's potential, others like Chris Castle are more skeptical, particularly of it's need to be forced on rights holders as a means of making the technology scalable. Guest post by Chris Castle of Music Tech Solutions The truth about blockchain is that at its core, it requires its regime to be enforced on rights owners in order to scale–and that is its essential flaw. Call me a blockchain ...

This is a show you don't want to miss. Saxophone and winds master Jowee Omicil is in possession of what is simply one of the most soothing, soulful and spiritual sounds that his instruments of choice have ever rendered. The Montreal-born musician of Haitian descent had the distinct honor of being invited to perform for the White House’s inaugural observation of Haitian Flag Day on May 18, sharing the enveloping sound of his alto and soprano saxophones and clarinet for ...

Trumpet Ace Melvin Jones Hits Straight to the Core on His "Pivot" Album

Trumpet Ace Melvin Jones Hits Straight to the Core on His "Pivot" Album

Source: Gapplegate Music Review by Grego Edwards

I am not going to mess with a lot of words today. That's because a lot of words are not needed to capture what Melvin Jones's Pivot (Turnaround 1004) is all about. Mr. Jones plays trumpet with a brash and bold extroversion that puts him in the Lee Morgan-Freddie Hubbard-Woody Shaw bracket. Hook him up with a very hot band (like the one here), let him get his own tunes in there, and let loose. This is music with that ...

Core Music Bundle Offers New Method for Jazz Education

Core Music Bundle Offers New Method for Jazz Education

Source: Michael Ricci

Fifty years ago, learning jazz was based on apprenticeship on the bandstand, preceded by lessons with a classical teacher and a lot of hanging at the clubs. Possibly the latter was substituted by the new Long Play stereo records. Since then, jazz has become an institutionalized art form with prescribed course material. The books have often received a position as one-stop solutions; some deservingly, others far more questionably. Where classical music education found its uniformly accepted teaching methods centuries ago, ...

Will Apple Launch a Quad-Core Macbook Pro at Macworld?

Will Apple Launch a Quad-Core Macbook Pro at Macworld?

Source: All About Jazz

Some are speculating that Apple's top-of-the-line notebook could receive a significant chip upgrade at January's Macworld Expo.

When Apple refreshed its MacBook family in October, it mysteriously left out the 17-inch MacBook Pro -- Apple's high-end notebook designed for creative professionals. Incidentally, APC noticed Intel quietly added a new quad-core mobile processor to its CPU line. APC deduces that it's likely Apple stalled on upgrading the 17-inch MacBook Pro to await Intel's quad-core mobile processor, dubbed the Core 2 Extreme ...
