Telmo Fernandez

Telmo Fernandez is a Spanish Guitarist, Songwriter and Arranger. With an eclectic style of his own his work goes from the classic guitar-organ-drums trio to larger ensembles. Based in the tradition of B.A.M and Latin music, he has written and arranged from Latin tunes to RnB as well as straight ahead Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop and Afro Cuban Music.

Deeply rooted in the sounds of the 70´s he adds a contemporary flavor of his own to the music. His influences go from legendary guitarists like Grant Green and Wes Montgomery to iconic artists such as Roy Ayers, Mongo Santamaría, Albert King, James Brown, Elio Revé or Pacho Alonso.

He has played and/or recorded with some of the best organ players on the scene. With a “Horn-like” approach on the guitar, he feels very comfortable playing trio with organ and drums due to the natural blending between these three instruments.

After a 5 year hiatus in his career, he comes back strongly to the scene with three new albums under his arm. The first one of these new three L.P´s is “El Maldecido”, a large ensemble featuring some of the most acclaimed cuban musicians in the Spanish scene. The album revisits the Salsa Brava and Afro-Cuban Music of the 70´s through eleven tracks composed and arranged by the guitarist. A deep and personal homage to this music gender and his Antillean Ancestors.

About his last album “El Maldecido” the legendary guitarist Rodney Jones has said:

“Telmo Fernandez is known to the “A List” of Jazz Guitarists as being a wonderful and soulful player. He is an Undiscovered gem of jazz guitar and so much more.

What most people don’t know is that Telmo is a genius and visionary composer and arranger. His compositions has the modern harmonic sense of a Herbie Hancock with the soulfulness of Stanley Turrentine. A rare combination indeed.

His latest album is nothing short of a masterpiece. Telmo has incorporated the best of jazz guitar, with a brilliant assortment of latin based tunes.

If you love music from the heart, soulful music? If you want to open your mind, and move your feet? If you want to discover modern latin music mastery, that makes you just feel good? This is the album for you.

This album is a work of brilliance and genius that never loses the human touch. It speaks of the hearts journey and of love and life lived. I listened to it start to finish, and enjoyed every note. You will too.”

Telmo Fernandez Organ Trio: The Soul Jazz Beat Vol. 1

Read "The Soul Jazz Beat Vol. 1" reviewed by Bruce Lindsay

The Telmo Fernández Organ Trio is a bit of a throwback--to the classic hard bop organ trios of yore. The title of the trio's first album, The Soul Jazz Beat Vol. 1, tells it like it is--a soulful, jazzy, collection that's high on melody and groove, a head-shaking and hip-swinging sort of album, low on pretention but filled with sheer joy. Guitarist Fernández leads the trio alongside drummer Jose Luis Gómez and ex-pat British organist Phil Wilkinson. Fernández ...

I ́ve picked my top five tunes. All are great, but these are my favorites. First I’ll say that this music is the foundation of the Organ Funk Genre.

1- “Pot Pie” (Fernandez)- Great groove and melody
2- “Chicke Fingers” (Fernandez)- Reminds me of Funk Inc. Another great melody, funky
