Renee Fiallos
From the title track, “Tomorrow is My Turn,” to the last song, the outstanding recording reveals Ms. Fiallos’ versatile and passionate musicianship. She chose the songs carefully. Each one has been previously recorded only by the composers themselves, except for “Jockey Full of Bourbon” by Tom Waits.
The self-taught musician grew up in Miami, which allowed her the opportunity to study and perform with other accomplished artists in the area, such as pianist Mike Gerber and the late Pete Minger, a flugel horn player.
Her credentials are many. Ms. Fiallos was one of 14 musicians selected by Livio Tratenberg to be a part of his Nervous City Orchestra. She scatted, she sang 13th Century songs in both Latin and Gallegeo, and she played flute. She was a member of the Spam All Stars. She’s a regular at Churchill’s weekly Miami Jazz Jam, which was voted 2007’s Best Jazz Venue by Miami New Times.
She’s played the Byron Carlyle Theater; Tobacco Road; Jazzid; Art Basil; Luna Star Café; Flute; Club Exit; Shantal Lounge; Granite Café (Pensacola); Tiki Bar; and Pearl at Nikki Beach. She’s also played at the Arts at St. Johns season showcase, Jupiter Jazz Fest, and the Women and Culture Festival, as well as at many art openings.
Ms. Fiallos is a student of music history and has discovered, learned and revived songs from the Middle Ages to the modern jazz age. She released three CDs under the name Generica Consort that are impassioned versions of songs from Medieval times to the Baroque period. The Native American has also spent countless seasons as a strolling Renaissance musician.
But the new CD, My Turn, is all jazz, both sophisticated and commercially appealing. Ms. Fiallos doubles as vocalist and flutist on most of the tunes. Her fluid playing and sultry voice will leave listeners wanting to hear more from her.
Ms. Fiallos’ influences include Charlie Parker, Eric Dolphy, Monk, Sheila Jordan, Miles Davis, Fred Astaire, Groucho Marx, Jean Pierre Rampal, and Glenn Gould.
