Rui Guilherme Ramos Vaz Cardoso
I started my music education when I was 5 years old, in Regional Conservatory of Coimbra. A couple of years later I begun to play piano in a private school in Coimbra and changed to guitar when I was 14 years old, after my piano teacher moved to another city. I had guitar lessons at 16 years old in another private school, AMTC. At secondary school I played acoustic guitar with two more friends in school parties. I went to study Environmental Sciences at Évora University in 1997 and changed to Vila Real to study Environmental Engineering (1998-2004). I studied guitar in Jazz School of Oporto (from 1999 to 2001), with Carlos Mendes, that introduced me to Jazz. I interrupted my music studies due to my degree in Environmental Engineering between the years 2001 and 2003. Jazz had an impact on me, thanks to Carlos Mendes and I decided that after my graduation I would enrol in a school that taught Jazz. That school was CETM, in Viseu. It was there that I had the possibility to have lessons with great Portuguese players: Luis Lapa, Paulo Pinto on guitar and Paulo Gomes on harmony. In January of 2006 Paulo Gomes and Paulo Pinto decided to leave the school and I decided to follow them and to have private lessons, piano and guitar, respectively. Since I never had a full time education in music and I wanted to improve my knowledge and my music foundations I applied and begun my studies at Middlesex University, London in BA Jazz. There, I had the pleasure to be taught by great names in the UK Jazz scene such as, Stuart Hall, Nikki Iles, Rob Townsend, Chris Batchelor, Malcolm Edmonston, Nick Smart and Gareth Williams. I have finished my degree in May 2009 and returned to Portugal in December of that year. Currently I am having lessons with Paulo Vaz de Carvalho in Vila Real in classical guitar and giving guitar lessons in a private school.
