Ted Hogarth

Ted Hogarth has a passion for all things music. He’s a composer, arranger, archivist, educator, performer, and leads several critically acclaimed ensembles. After attending high school at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts, he completed undergraduate studies at Arizona State University and Northeastern Illinois University, and received a Master's Degree in Jazz Composition with Distinction from DePaul University.

In Chicago, his home for 20 years, he quickly established himself as the first-call baritone saxophonist and woodwind doubler for local and internationally touring jazz groups. Because of his skills as a woodwind doubler, Ted has played in many Broadway musicals, such as Jersey Boys and Dream Girls, including five years on the national tour of Jersey Boys and one year on the national tour of A Bronx Tale. In addition, Ted maintained a vibrant teaching studio where he taught saxophone, clarinet, theory, and jazz improvisation. Several of his former students are now fixtures in the Chicago and New York music communities. He has also taught private lessons at area middle and high schools and Columbia College Chicago.

Ted has released four recordings as a leader and is on over a dozen recordings by artists such as Phil Woods, Slide Hampton, Mark Tremonti, Rob Parton, and Kimo Williams. His most recent release is Ted Hogarth: Attraction, Ted Hogarth plays Gene Bertoncini. Other recordings as a leader include: The Mulligan Mosaics Big Band, Live at the Jazz Showcase; Misconception, a collection of original compositions with his sextet THC; Steps Taken, inspired by a trip to Cuba in 2000 to study with Orlando Sanchez and other master Cuban musicians at Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte.

He is the founder and leader of The Mulligan Mosaics Big Band and serves on the board of The Gerry & Franca Mulligan Foundation. He was named a Rising Star on baritone saxophone and clarinet by DownBeat magazine in its 60th, 61st, 65th, 69th, and 70th Annual Critics Poll.

Ted moved to Kalamazoo in 2016, where he enjoys honing his craft, composing, spending time with family, and being in nature. He plays with the Birdseed Salesmen, a local group focusing on the music and style popularized by Django Reinhardt. Ted currently teaches private lessons online as well as at Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana.

The Pete Ellman Big Band: The Twelve Grooves of Christmas

Read "The Twelve Grooves of Christmas" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

As we enter the Holidays, the airwaves and digital streams flow with seasonal fare of all types of genres. And, once we ring in the New Year, said music heads back into hibernation until the next Thanksgiving and December roll around. The Pete Ellman Big Band's The Twelve Grooves of Christmas is such a fine recording that it might not be surprising for listeners to listen to it year around. The effort is that good. This high-energy ...

Pete Ellman: For Pete's Ache

Read "For Pete's Ache" reviewed by Nicholas F. Mondello

Long a fixture throughout Chicagoland, the Ellman name is synonymous with all things musical. No “ache" at all, this album is a fun big-band romp. There is some outstanding ensemble and solo work and the various terrific arrangements bring the best out of a superb, engaged ensemble. The opener, “High Speed Pursuit," is a whirlwind burner which demonstrates the swing, muscle, and solo talent of this fine ensemble. Think “Naked Gun" on speed. The swing spirit is ...

Ted Hogarth Collective: Misconception

Read "Misconception" reviewed by Edward Blanco

Multi-saxophonist Ted Hogarth's second outing, Misconception, is a charmer with an appealingly relaxing and soft side, though it has a splattering of the hard bop sound on several tracks. A veteran of the Chicago jazz scene, Hogarth's experience extends to playing regularly with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and, most notably, with trumpeter Rob Parton and his JazzTech Big Band. While his primary musical instrument of choice remains the baritone, he plays the rarely-heard C-melody saxophone here. Unfortunately, the liner notes ...

The Ted Hogarth Collective: Misconception

Read "Misconception" reviewed by Jack Bowers

I was unfamiliar with saxophonist Ted Hogarth, but my hunch before listening to his second album, Misconception, was that anyone who has played with Rob Parton's Chicago-based JazzTech Big Band, as Hogarth has, must be pretty darned good. That impression was correct. Hogarth is pretty darned good--and so is his six-member Collective, which lives up to its name with an admirably congenial performance.

Hogarth, an ardent post bopper, plays primarily tenor and baritone sax. According to the booklet and tray ...

Ted Hogarth: Steps Taken

Read "Steps Taken" reviewed by Dave Nathan

Chicago-based performer and jazz educator, Ted Hogarth, is adept at all the single reed instruments, specializing in the baritone sax and bass clarinet, al la one of his famous predecessors, Harry Carney, who pioneered the use of the bass clarinet in an orchestral setting. Hogarth has regularly performed with a number of high-level jazz artists such as Charlie Haden, Willie Pickens and Von Freeman. On this his first album as a leader he has taken a quartet into the studio ...
