Evan Palmer

Evan Palmer (they/them) is a bassist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator based in Brooklyn. They specialize in improvised music and jazz.

Raised in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Palmer moved to Boston in 2018 to attend Berklee College of Music, where they studied with John Lockwood, Francisco Mela, Bob Gullotti, and Linda May Han Oh. They graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Music in Bass Performance.

Palmer's music is a synthesis of many artistic influences, drawing from the jazz tradition, improvised musics from around the world, folk and country music, rock and roll, metal, and more. Through improvisation, composition, and an arsenal of traditional and extended techniques, they are developing a deeply personal artistic language and concept that can be heard across their many different projects, from solo bass performances, to hard-hitting free jazz ensembles, to jazz standards and more.

Palmer is a frequent feature of the New York City and New England improvised music and jazz scenes. They have performed and/or recorded with many artists including Tony Malaby, Hilliard Greene, Ken Filiano, Marc Edwards, Phillip Greenlief, Greg Kelley, Weasel Walter, Kevin Shea, Francisco Mela and Yoron Israel. They've performed at the Arts for Art InGardens festival in Manhattan and the New York Forward Festival. Palmer has also given performance and composition masterclasses with John Dalton's Spheres of Influence and the Jim Robitaille Group at UMass Dartmouth and Springfield College. In 2024, they released their first album as a leader, Processes, with Francisco Mela and Hidemi Akaiwa.
