Michael Jenner

Michael Jenner’s music builds on a foundation of hard bop and classic soul, brimming with a joyful, playful spirit; his deceptively simple tunes reveal hidden wrinkles that give way to exhilarating, free-flowing improvisations that have been described as "intense" (OffBeat) and "graceful"(N.O. Times-Picayune).  

Raised in Pittsburgh, New Orleans has been Jenner’s adopted hometown since 1997. The city’s deep musical roots, warm community and inspiring music scene have all deeply shaped his music and personal philosophy.  

Michael began playing alto saxophone in 6th grade, but really fell in love with the tenor saxophone when he was 15 after hearing Joe Henderson’s album “So Near, So Far” (which he heard about from a 1993 “People” magazine review).  The tangible energy of that recording set the standard that he would continue to pursue as an artist—chasing the ephemeral joy that comes from the effortless, almost telepathic connection between improvising musicians, transcending the space between player and listener, all in an effort to briefly bring a little more beauty into the world.

While Jenner has earned praise for his "fantastic saxophone skills” (WWOZ), his music eschews empty virtuosity, aiming instead for grounded, honest connection. Jenner’s love of community is reflected in his band “Feed The Kitty” (featuring many of his favorite New Orleans saxophonists) and his cross-generational collaborations with mentors like Don Aliquo, Michael Pellera, and Johnny Vidacovich. 

Jenner's current release, “Sparkle On!” reunites him with two of his most profound musical mentors: legendary New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich and pianist Michael Pellera, with the support of bassist Matt Booth. His fourth album, it features his engaging original tunes as well as jazz standards by Charles Lloyd, Lucky Thompson, and Mose Allison—its laid back vibe emphasizing beauty, communication, and some sub tropical New Orleans grooves, released March 2026.
