Adele Sebastian

Adele Sebastian was an American jazz flautist, vocalist, composer, and educator whose brief career left an enduring mark on West Coast spiritual jazz. Born in Riverside, California, she studied Theatre Arts and Pan-Afrikan Studies at California State University, Los Angeles, where she became deeply involved in the city's creative Black Arts movement. 

A central member of pianist and composer Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and the Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMAA), Sebastian developed a distinctive musical voice that blended modal jazz, African musical traditions, poetry, and spirituality. Her warm, lyrical flute playing and expressive vocals reflected both her technical ability and her commitment to music as a vehicle for cultural expression.

In 1981, Sebastian recorded her only album as a leader, Desert Fairy Princess, for Tom Albach's Nimbus West label. Long regarded as a hidden gem of spiritual jazz, the album features original compositions alongside imaginative interpretations of works by John Coltrane and others. Though overlooked at the time of its release, it has since become a highly regarded recording among collectors and jazz historians, helping to cement Sebastian's reputation as one of the most compelling flautists of her generation.

Despite living with severe kidney disease and undergoing regular dialysis, Sebastian remained an active performer and dedicated member of Tapscott's musical community until her death from kidney failure in 1983 at the age of 27. Her life and music continue to inspire new generations of listeners, and Desert Fairy Princess is now widely recognized as a landmark recording in the history of spiritual and avant-garde jazz.
