Mississippi Heat: Warning Shot

Read "Warning Shot" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

My father, born in 1915 and having seen and heard such, would call Warning Shot “Roadhouse Music." More technically, this is “jump blues" employing a larger-than-average band with an unidentified horn section on a majority of the 16 selections, the longest clocking in at 5:36 and the shortest at 3:00. This is an old-fashioned recording of 45 rpm singles ready of radio play, the majority of which would play well on what remains of independently-programmed radio. Mississippi ...

Mississippi Heat: Let's Live It Up!

Read "Let's Live It Up!" reviewed by Nic Jones

In times like these, the blues form is well-placed to reflect them, and with its sometimes fine balance of the urban and the down-home, Mississippi Heat is a band more than capable of doing it. Pierre Lacocque, a mouth harp virtuoso without any of the negative connotations such virtuosity might imply, has been leading the band for awhile now, and Let's Live It Up! shows he's doing it as effectively as ever, just as he's coming up ...

Mississippi Heat: Let's Live it Up!

Read "Let's Live it Up!" reviewed by John Barron

Formed in 1991, Mississippi Heat has become one of the more popular modern blues bands out of Chicago. Led by harmonica great Pierre Lacocque, this high-energy ensemble has released nine recordings with a rotating cast of top-notch talent. On Let's Live it Up!, the group delivers a rocking set with the help of earthy vocalist Inetta Visor and guitar greats John Primer and Carl Weathersby. The bulk of the disc's material is written by Lacocque and covers all ...

Mississippi Heat: Hattiesburg Blues

Read "Hattiesburg Blues" reviewed by Nic Jones

Varied is the word on this one, even whilst the music retains a cohesive feel. Pierre Lacocque's harmonica is notable for its singularity, and he heads a rolling cast of musicians in the realization of his original compositions plus one from Denise Lasalle, amongst others.

The music is clean and dirty at the same time. This take on Chicago blues is permissive of variations on the formula theme and they're mostly welcome. “Light From Within" exemplifies how the band can ...

DAVE SPECTER Live In Chicago (Delmark DVD 1794 / CD DE 794)

Blues guitarist Dave Specter is never prone to grandstanding. He communicates an inherent sense of style and form, subtlety and swing, keeping his magnetic needle always fixed on a steady, unalterable course. Recorded live at Buddy Guy's Legends and Rosa's Blues Lounge, Live In Chicago features special guests Jimmy Johnson, Tad Robinson ...
