Kristijan Krajnčan

Kristijan Krajnčan established himself as one of the most prominent European artists of his generation. A virtuoso on both violoncello and drums, as well as a composer and filmmaker, he has collaborated on 63 albums and performed in more than 25 countries across Europe, the USA, Asia, Indonesia, the Middle East, and Africa. He composes music for film, theatre, interdisciplinary, and dance productions. He has received numerous international awards in all areas of his work, including a Special Prize at the Seifert Competition for Jazz Strings (Poland) for “artistic value and original playing style,” a semifinalist position at the Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition for Drums (Washington), and selection for the Dave Douglas Workshop: Creative Composition and Improvisation (Carnegie Hall, New York). His work is marked by an ambition to unite ancient storytelling with contemporary creative techniques.

Robert Jukič 4 + Bram De Looze: Congregation

Read "Congregation" reviewed by Maciej Stasiowski

How about approaching this one through visuals rather than sound for a change? Album covers alone do a remarkable job of transporting us into a particular state of mind, and Robert Jukic's catalog testifies to a consistently compelling visual identity. Izza's (ZKPRTVS, 2022) forsaken armchair beside a crooked telegraph pole or the disintegrating Ford Cortina in the woods on We All Bleed (Real Over Junk, 2026) are every bit as persuasive as the music itself--because of the atmosphere they evoke. ...

Kristijan Krajnčan Quartet: Honey Sparks In The Dark

Read "Honey Sparks In The Dark" reviewed by Ian Patterson

The hit of honey on tastebuds and the met gaze of a homeless man may seem like curious seeds of inspiration for an album, but Kristijan Krajnčan is no run-of-the-mill artist. A double threat as a virtuoso cellist and drummer, Krajnčan is also a filmmaker and soundtrack composer. What perhaps best defines his artistry is an organic appreciation of music that recognizes no boundaries between genres, or between past and present. For the Slovenian multi-instrumentalist, everything belongs in the great ...

Kristijan Krajnčan: Zabučale Gore: The Mountains Roared

Read "Zabučale Gore: The Mountains Roared" reviewed by Ian Patterson

The drumming cellist is not as common a species as perhaps it should be, judging by Zabučale Gore (The Mountains Roared), the third full-length album by multi- instrumentalist Kristijan Krajnčan. The Slovenian drummer and cellist spent two years exploring his country's folk music and mythology to better understand the national identity. That the results are emotionally engaging yet mysterious, traditional and modern, suggests that his search for the soul of Slovenia has returned, if not quite a chimera, then a ...

Kristijan Krajncan Ensemble: Siberian Bear

Read "Siberian Bear" reviewed by Jerry D'Souza

Kranj, Slovenia-born drummer Kristijan Krajnčan first studied the violincello before going on to jazz drumming. The move turned out to be astute for he had now found his niche. On his way to graduating in jazz drumming, and even later, he won several European prizes, and was active on the jazz scene playing in groups that ranged from trio to big band, besides leading his own KK Contemporary Jazz Ensemble. In the midst of all this he found time to ...
