King Heron

King Heron sprang from the friendship of three strong musical personalities who share a love of exploration, groove and improvisation. The Bristol trio was formed in 2021 after playing together under other guises and finding their feet within the city’s modern jazz scene. Their unapologetically different slant on the traditional guitar trio form takes cues from a wide spectrum of music - funk, jazz, R&B, soul, modern interpretations of jazz and electronic music all form part of their own distinct fusion sound.

Their debut EP ‘Troika EP’ is set to be released in April 2022 following a launch gig at Bristol favourite venue The Gallimaufry. The EP shows King Heron exploring what the guitar trio can be - always groove-oriented with hard-edged bass lines, poignant melodies, clanging rock and nods towards New-Orleans and Afro-Cuban. The crux of ‘Troika EP’ is the relationship between the band members. Cameron Macdougall’s restrained engrossment with drum groove, Cerith Evans’ love of metal subgenres and classic funk, and Jacob Houghton’s sincere expression and study of jazz coalesce to form the rustic and honest sound of three friends playing in one room together.
