Jasper Høiby

Danish double bassist, composer, and bandleader Jasper Høiby has established himself as one of the most dynamic and expressive forces in modern European jazz. Born in Copenhagen on May 10, 1977, Høiby was drawn to rhythm early in life, listening to hip-hop as a pre-teen before picking up the bass at age fourteen. After laying his musical foundations in Denmark, he moved to the United Kingdom in 2000 to attend London's Royal Academy of Music. During his studies, he immersed himself in the city's fertile jazz scene and became an active member of the influential, artist-led Loop Collective, forging connections that would shape his artistic path for decades to come.

Høiby first achieved widespread international acclaim through Phronesis, the piano trio he founded in 2005 alongside British pianist Ivo Neame and Swedish drummer Anton Eger. Renowned for their kinetic energy, intricate polyrhythms, and near-telepathic group interplay, the trio captured the attention of audiences and critics worldwide. Seminal releases such as Alive, Walking Dark, and Life to Everything earned the ensemble top honors across major music publications, securing their place at the forefront of contemporary acoustic jazz.

Beyond the success of Phronesis, Høiby has consistently expanded his compositional scope through a series of ambitious, conceptually driven projects. With Fellow Creatures, a quintet featuring musicians such as saxophonist Mark Lockheart and trumpeter Laura Jurd, he blended folk-infused melodies with modern jazz structures. He later ventured into electro-acoustic territory with Planet B, a trio featuring saxophonist Josh Arcoleo and drummer Marc Michel that integrates live looping and spoken-word excerpts from global thinkers to address pressing environmental and social issues. More recently, his 3Elements project has served as an evolving vehicle for acoustic trio interplay, yielding dynamic recordings such as Earthness, Like Water, and Conversations of Hope.

Høiby’s signature sound is defined by driving bass ostinatos, rich melodic clarity, and a seamless balance between rigorous arrangement and spontaneous improvisation. His work as a leader frequently reflects a deep commitment to environmental preservation and human connectivity, using music as a bridge for broader social commentary. In addition to guiding his own ensembles, Høiby has collaborated with an array of prominent artists—including Mark Guiliana, Shai Maestro, Marius Neset, Kurt Elling, and Django Bates—and continues to inspire the next generation of musicians through his role as a professor of jazz bass at London's Royal Academy of Music.
