Jan Allan

Jan Allan (* Jan Bertil Allan on 7. November 1934 in Falun) is a Swedish trumpet player and composer. He also a physicist.

Jan Allen started his career in the 50's as a pianist, then changed to the trumpet as his main instrument. He joined the Carl-Henrik Norin orchestra. During that time, he also earned his doctoral degree as a physicist. Despite the relatively small discography as a leader, Allen is one of the most important jazz musicians in Sweden. During the 1960's he worked with Arne Domnérus, Georg Riedel und Bengt Hallberg. His album 'Jan Allan - 70' won the Golden Record as the Best Swedish Jazz Recording of the Year by the magazine 'Orkester Journalen'. Among the musicians on that album were Rolf Ericson, Nils Lindberg, Bobo Stenson, Jon Christensen and Rune Gustafson. Jan Allan recorded a trio album (Sweet And Loverly) with Gustafson and Riedel in 1992. Allan's album 'Software' from 1998 had a strong affinity to West Coast Jazz in the tradition of Gerry Mulligan and Stan Getz. Jan Allan composed the music for the movies 'Picassos äventyr' (1978), 'Sopor' (1981) and 'Trollkarlen' (1999). During his career, he recorded with Boss Broberg, Benny Carter, Dorothy Donegan, Lars Gullin, Jan Johansson, Thad Jones, Roger Kellaway, Lee Konitz, Nils Lindberg, Georg Riedel, George Russell and Monica Zetterlund.
