Ellen Demos

I was born in Boston Massachusettes. My early education included formal training in voice and classical piano. In my early twenties I found I had more interest in blues and jazz then the classics and began working with various jazz and ethnic ensembles in the Boston area. This included exposure to Indian music both classical and fusion and African drumming and dance. I later became interested in Brazilian music and worked in the New England area fusing jazz and Brazilian influences. I also worked in improvisational theater at that time. In 1979 I moved to Los Angeles and continued studies in vocal technique, composition and arranging. During this time I was also active in the recording industry doing commercial work and private projects. I also performed with big bands and small ensenmbles and formed the Brazilian band "Pastoria" with saxophonist Mike Mcmullen. It was via this liason that I made the move to Europe.

Since then I've appeared in concert in Belgium, Germany, France, Portugal, Denmark,Hungary,Ireland and England. I've done work for radio and television. In Denmark I have worked as a soloist for the Danish Light Music Orchestra. In Ireland I have appeared with my own ensembles on both radio and television and have been a featured soloist with the Irish Radio(RTE) Orchestra. I have also been featured at the Cork,Dublin and Sligo Jazz festivals. On the educational scene, I participate in workshops at local clubs and festivals and I also teach privately.

The instrumentation is spare, amounting to only Nielsen's guitar, Demos' voice, Brendan Doyle's clarinets and percussionist Shane O'Donavan's thumping. Without much baggage to carry, this group is well fit to interpret whatever music they wish. The ...

Ellen Demos: Osmosis

Read "Osmosis" reviewed by C. Michael Bailey

Immediately, American expatriate Ellen Demos makes me recall two vocalists from this past year. The first is Lisa Sokolov , with her unique vocal style. Demos possesses the same vocal uniqueness without the burden of the iconoclastic that Sokolov bears. Second is Johanna Grüssner , who, like Demos, used mostly guitar accompaniment and weaved a large swath of bossa nova through her recording. Far from a synthesis of the two, Ellen Demos projects a completely realized style and content when ...
