About the Album

Following her JUNO / ECMA-nominated You’ll Never Know, Heather Bambrick releases Fine State, a new recording featuring some of the highly respected vocalist’s best work yet. The project is thematically personal to Heather, with material that touches on themes of racism, homophobia, and the general tone of divisiveness in the world. At the same time, it addresses these themes with artistry and taste, while also presenting ideas of love, connection, and the familiar nostalgia of yearning for a sense of “home”. As expected, Heather pays “boat-loads” of homage to her Newfoundland home, with sophisticated arrangements of traditional folk music. There’s also some more original material from Heather, something that happened on the advice of fellow artists, including Molly Johnson. “Molly encouraged me to look more seriously at writing my own music and using my song-writing voice as well as my singing voice. I’ve really enjoyed moving a little more in that direction and I’m proud of the results on this new record.” There’s also plenty of Canadian representation in song selection, including material from Burton Cummings, Gene Lees, the Breithaupt Brothers, and more. More than anything, Fine State is a new sound for Heather, showing a more pop/rock-influenced tone, and moving away from the feel of previous recordings. “It brings together more of the things that inspire me overall, not just in jazz and not just in music. The arrangements show influences from rock, pop, and folk music, and the tunes we’ve chosen have a strong connection to the events of the world around me and the roots of who I am as a musician and a person.”
