About the Album

Matt Robbins presents to you his debut album “Love in the Active Voice”, a collection of his own art songs drawing on the rich harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary of modern jazz, with a foundation of R&B sensibility. Written for trumpet and alto saxophone in addition to piano trio, the arrangements highlight his high tenor vocal range and lush piano accompaniment, while leaving ample room for expressive improvisation from the band. Patrick Kunka - Drums Jeff Koch - Bass Matt Davis - Guitar Andrew Gould - Alto Saxophone Matt Holman - Trumpet/Flugelhorn Matt Robbins - Piano/Voice "The Bicycle Mechanic" is a melancholic circle-of-life story, told in the language of spiraling modal harmonies and metric modulations. Two improvisation sections, by piano, and then with the whole group, represent the passage of time between statement and conclusion of the vocal theme.
