About the Album

Hip, sleek funk-jazz take on Sly Stone's classic. Mueller's wah-wah clavichord sets the tone, and his Medeski-like organ solo sizzles. But it's Paul Nelson's guitar performance that makes this simple tune transcend into the fusion realm. Nelson is a Blues Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy winner. He uses both single tone and double octave settings to alternate between prog power and slinky blues. Isaiah Schmidt's drumming is superb. A full R&B band is simulated by multi-tracking two excellent horn players: NYC's David Dejesus on alto, tenor, baritone saxes, and Nashville's Mikie Martel on trumpets, trombone. Mueller's acoustic bass playing is also stellar, full of personality and grit. A spellbinding journey worthy of the "prestidigitation" designation, full of emotional hills and valleys, surging energy and laid-back cool moments. Magical.
