About the Album
“Instinct 4” captures the raw, spontaneous energy at the heart of Otsukaresama, the latest album by French saxophonist and composer Grégory Sallet. This track features a powerful and unpredictable exchange between drummer Kevin Lucchetti and Indian tabla master Prabhu Edouard, unfolding over a shifting 7/4 groove. Sallet’s alto saxophone weaves through this percussive storm with lyrical precision, while Michel Molines anchors the piece on double bass with subtle tension and pulse.
Rather than imposing a strict compositional framework, “Instinct 4” thrives on interplay—each musician responding in real-time to the evolving texture. The piece blends contemporary European jazz aesthetics with rhythmic traditions from the Indian subcontinent, offering a dialogue between cultures as much as between instruments.
Part ritual, part improvisational detonation, “Instinct 4” is both a showcase of technical command and a testament to twenty years of musical trust within Sallet’s Sur Écoute Quartet.
